Bulgaria borders five other countries: Romania to the north, Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south. The Black Sea defines the extent of the country to the east. Bulgaria has an industrialised, open free market economy.
Bulgaria occupies a unique and strategically important geographic location. The country has served as a major crossroads between Europe, Asia and Africa. Five of the ten Trans-European corridors run through its territory. Air travel has developed relatively comprehensively. Bulgaria has six official international airports - at Sofia, Burgas, Varna, Plovdiv, Rousse and Gorna Oryahovitsa. The most important shipping ports - at Varna and Burgas, this seaports have the largest turnover. |
